Mbombela

The new University of Mpumalamga central building combines teaching, assembly and library facilities, all wrapped with screens which temper the strong lowveld light. The screen blocks use binary code to repeat the phrase “ learning is light” in all eleven South African official languages. The pedestrian way from the foot of the future campus cuts through the two halfves of the complex. A cloud of photovoltaic panels provides a horizontal screen to the roof.
